DigiCipher - General Instrument

DigiCipher was the first digital HDTV system to be announced to the Advisory Committee.  It used a proprietary motion-compensated DCT video compression system and QAM transmission.  General Instrument had been working on digital compression for standard definition television in order to digitally encrypt programming that was distributed to cable operators.  With a relatively simple system and a mature hardware platform they were a formidable proponent.
